It’s not unusual for a student to spend the summer playing games on the computer. One Lamar CISD student spent enough time online this summer to finish among the region’s best at her game.

And she sharpened her math skills at the same time.

Wessendorff Middle School student Shaquala Williams finished 8^th in the region in the Tabula Digita Summer Math Challenge. Competing via the Internet against students across the nation between June 14 and August 13 Shaquala accumulated 101,756 points.

She began playing the DimensionM – a collection of video games designed to improve math skills -- at Seguin Elementary during the spring semester. Tabula Digita is the parent company of DimensionM.

George Ranch High School freshman Sean Hardin will appear in Theatre Under The Stars’ (TUTS) and Humphreys School of Musical Theatre’s production The Who’s Tommy, based on the 1969 rock opera album Tommy by Pete Townshend.

This presentation, with an all-teen cast of students from Theatre Under The Stars’ Humphreys School of Musical Theatre, will run September 10-11, at Zilkha Hall. 

Hardin was last seen at TUTS in the southwest regional premiere of  13 - The Musical as “Archie.”

When he is not on stage, Sean works on many volunteer projects to help others. In March, he hosted a benefit concert for Compassion International Haiti Earthquake Relief and raised over $4,000. Sean also recorded an original song titled “Alive” as a part of the Stop Drunk Driving Now campaign for kids.

After the TUTS show, Sean will play Robin Hood at the Fort Bend Theatre the first two weekends of October.

Lamar Consolidated High School’s Varsity Cheerleaders will have their fall cheer clinic September 18, from 8:30 a.m. to noon.

Any boy or girl enrolled in Pre-Kindergarten through 5^th grade is invited. Pre-register for $25, now until September 14, or register for $30 at the door. Registration will begin at 8 a.m. in the LCHS Performance Gym.

All clinic participates will receive a clinic T-shirt, water bottle and an invitation to perform during the 3^rd-quarter at the LCHS varsity football game, September 23, vs. Foster.
